Journalists shortlisted for Human Rights Awards

The Australian Human Rights Commission today announced the finalists in the radio, print and online categories of the 2013 Australian Human Rights Awards.

Debra Jopson (The Global Mail), Daniella Militec (The Age) and Sarah Dingle (ABC Radio) are among those shortlisted for 2013 awards.

Also shortlisted are Carol Dowling (Noongar Radio), Kirsti Melville and Meri Fatin (ABC Radio National), Felicity Ogilvie (ABC AM), Luke Williams (The Global Mail) and Moira Byrne (The Global Mail).

“We received a record number of nominations for the 2013 Human Rights Awards,” said Commission President, Professor Gillian Triggs.

“Many of the stories submitted this year highlighted issues that usually go unnoticed.

“Sarah Dingle focussed on child sexual abuse within the family home, while Carol Dowling drew attention to the prevalence of ear disease among Noongar communities in Western Australia.

“Kirsti Melville examined Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement with the resource industry in the Kimberley, and Felicity Ogilvie helped bring our attention to the detention of unaccompanied children seeking asylum,” Professor Triggs said.

Professor Triggs commended The Global Mail for its strong showing in the print and online category.

“The judging panel was impressed by Luke Williams’ investigation of ex-gay therapy at Toongabbie Christian School; Moira Byrne’s account of the life of people with disabilities and their carers; and Debra Jopson’s investigation into the demise of rock art sites across the nation.

“The panel was similarly impressed by Daniella Militec’s exploration of life and death at Bethlehem Hospital in Melbourne,” Professor Triggs said.

The 2013 Australian Human Rights Awards will be presented in Sydney on 10 December at the Museum of Contemporary Art.  The awards are a unique opportunity to celebrate the work of individuals and organisations who contribute to human rights in Australia.

Shortlisted nominees in the TV and literature categories will be announced later this week.
