Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan will hold a series of high-profile speaker events across the country this September, including one event just announced for Melbourne.

The event series is part of the Sharing the Stories of Australian Muslims project, and brings together professional speakers from the Australian Muslim community, or with expertise on issues affecting the community, to talk about topics of national importance.

The ‘Calling out Casual Racism’ event in Melbourne will feature prominent Australian Muslim academics Professor Riaz Hassan (Flinders University) and Professor Fethi Mansouri (Deakin University).

“This new speaker series is part of the Sharing the Stories of Australian Muslims project,” said Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan.

“This project will be the first time the national race-hate and Islamophobia narrative is being told from the point of view of those on the receiving end.”

Alongside the event series, the Australian Human Rights Commission is holding face-to-face consultations across the country with members of the Australian Muslim community. Participants are encouraged to share their needs, experiences and challenges, as well as positive stories of inclusiveness and community cohesion.

“The Commission is committed to ensuring that Australian Muslim communities feel included and supported as equal members of Australian society,” Commissioner Tan said.

“The speaker series, consultations and online survey are an opportunity to ensure that the voices of Australian Muslims are properly heard in national discussions about community building and cohesion, as well as Islamophobia, racism and related intolerances in Australia.”

The ‘Calling Out Casual Racism’ event will be held at PwC Melbourne on Wednesday 11 September 2019 from 6pm to 8pm (AEST).
