The Hon Dr Kay Patterson AO delivered the keynote address at the launch of the Respecting Elders: Support and Conflict Resolution Services.  The new service will be delivered by FMC Mediation and Counselling in partnership with Seniors Rights Victoria and Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC), with a grant by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation's.

Commissioner Patterson spoke about the complex, often intra-familial nature of elder abuse and the need for a range of options and interventions at all stages, including mediation and counselling. She highlighted the right of older people to have their choices respected and the importance of ensuring that measures designed to protect older people from abuse are not overreaching or operate to disempower an older person who has capacity. The Commissioner welcomed the new service as a innovative model that aims to support and empower older people in situations of conflict.
