Australian Human Rights Commission President Hugh de Kretser has expressed concerns about calls for Palestinians fleeing Gaza to be denied entry to Australia.

"The situation in Gaza is dire. People there have the right to seek protection in another country.

"The Opposition Leader's call for a temporary ban on entry to people fleeing Gaza is concerning and dangerous. Australia should take a consistent, non-discriminatory approach to people fleeing war and other crises that complies with the international refugee and human rights obligations we have promised to uphold.

"Our asylum and refugee processes must be free from discrimination including on grounds of religion, race or country of origin. We should show compassion to those fleeing war. Recognising our common humanity is vital to promoting the fair and inclusive society we should aim to be."
