Released in March 2000, the Immigration Detention Guidelines are based on relevant international standards which set out minimum requirements for the treatment and conditions of detained persons.

The Guidelines were developed with the aim of establishing a minimum benchmark against which the Commission and others can evaluate conditions and treatment in immigration detention facilities in Australia.
