Rights of Passage(2005)

A dialogue with Young Australians about Human Rights

In 2005 the Human Rights Commissoner undertook a 'national dialogue' with young people on human rights.

Visiting schools, youth centres and other organisations, the project sought to listen to the views of young Australians – the issues that concern them, their understanding of rights and responsibilities and their ability to participate in decision making in their schools and communities.

‘Rights of Passage' includes an overview of these consultations, the results of a national survey involving 1,000 young people in 23 schools and youth centres and an analysis of effective approaches to human rights education.

The 'Human Writes' essay competition and the 'Rights in Perspective' art competition were also part of the national dialogue. Visit the competition pages to read the essays and view the artworks.
