Participant information and consent form
Military Sexual Trauma Research Project
Principal investigator - Hashini Panditharatne, Erica Powell
Project sponsor - Australian Human Rights Commission
What am I being invited to do?
We, the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) invite you to take part in a research project on military sexual trauma in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The AHRC is separate and independent from Defence. You can find out more about the AHRC on our website.
You have been invited to take part in this research because you are a current serving member of the ADF, located at a select base.
If you take part, we will ask you to join an interview with the AHRC and/or provide a written submission. This is to help us understand the impacts of military sexual trauma and think about ways that responses and supports can be improved for those affected.
Please read this information and ask us any questions. You can also talk to someone you trust, like a family member, friend, or your doctor or health professional. You can take some time to make up your mind. You get to decide whether this project is right for you.
Stages of project | What do I have to do? |
When you start the project | Register to take part in an interview. The registration link is in the invitation email. Follow the link to select your preferred interview date and time. When registering, you will be asked if you would like to bring a trusted person with you to the interview for support. We will send you an information sheet to give to them so they are prepared and understand their role in the interview. On the day, we will brief them about the project and ask them to sign a consent form before we begin the interview. You will have the option to request any accessibility needs, accommodations or preferences. We will contact you to confirm your registration and share an information pack. |
During the project | Interviews In the interview, we will ask questions around three key themes:
We won’t ask about personal experiences—what you share for our use in this project is entirely up to you. You should not share personal information of other people. If you do share this information, it will be collected by us, but we will not use their personal information. With your consent, interviews will be recorded by the AHRC team to support discussion and analysis, with some written notes also taken. If you do not consent to recording, the AHRC team will take notes. |
After the project completes | You can find project updates, including a report when published, on the AHRC website. |
