From: Chris Brophy Sent: Wednesday, 25 November 2009 1:34 PM To: disabdis Subject: Application made by Village Roadshow, Greater Union, Hoyts and Reading Cinemas requesting exemption from the Disability Discrimination Act I wish to express my strongest opposition to the recent application made by Village Roadshow, Greater Union, Hoyts and Reading Cinemas requesting exemption from the Disability Discrimination Act for a period of two and a half years. Jointly, these exhibitors have 1,182 screens across Australia, yet, if their application for exemption is approved this will mean only 105 of an estimated total of 41,370 screenings per week offered by these companies will be captioned and audio described. This is equal to less than 0.3% of all movies they screen per week. These companies should be doing more rather than less to improve accessibility for Australians with a hearing impairment.
