From: Gurdeesh Kaur Sent: Thursday, 3 December 2009 11:31 AM To: disabdis Subject: Application for exemption under DDA section 55: Cinema captioning and audio description - Submission in response To whom it may concern, I was DISGUSTED to hear about the exemption that Hoyts/Village/Greater Union/Reading cinemas have applied for. This is un-Australian and the fact that you have shortened the time for submissions to be sent in further infuriates me. This is unfair and further alienates members of society with a disability. This is not good for social welfare in Australia and further promotes the social isolation that hearing impaired members of society feel. The cinema companies make a HUGE profit and show movies at all times of the day throughout the week, despite this currently there are NO movies with captions showing in Victoria in a Hoyts cinema There is 1 movie with captions showing at a Village cinema in Melbourne and this is not suitable for all age groups, furthermore Village cinemas has NO captioned movies in any other state beside Tasmania and Victoria. Similarly Greater Union is only showing one movie in NSW. This is appaling and to suggest that this is what they stick to for the next two and a half years is blatant discrimination. Please consider the feelings of people with hearing impairment and refuse this exemption. Yours Sincerely, Dr Gurdeesh Kaur
