One in every six Australians currently experiences hearing impairment and this number is expected to rise to one in four by 2050. For hearing impaired Australians, who are often disadvantaged in social situations by their difficulties with auditory communication, a captioned film at the cinema is an easy outing and shared experience with friends. At a time when we are expecting the problem of hearing loss to grow, we should be looking at ways to increase the levels of access, in this case, captioning, for hearing impaired people.
