To: disabdis Subject: exemption request by Village, Greater Union, Hoyts and Reading Cinemas. To Whom it May Concern, I am writing to request that the above exemption is refused. As an adult with a hearing loss, and a teacher of the deaf, I feel that I am well qualified to comment on the exemption by these movie theatres. Currently there are a very small number of cinemas providing captioning to a very limited range of movies. To attend these movies from my home in Glen Waverley requires a long drive and the movies are rarely screening at a time that is suitable. I am quite good at lip reading but many movies are impossible to lip read – particularly cartoons and digital animation. I can also access some sound via the audio loop but still miss some important information. Currently, I usually wait until movies are released on DVD so that I can use the captions. Many movies are much more enjoyable on the large screen. In particular, spectacular movies such as Australia are much better on the large screen. Going to the movies is also a social experience. It is quite depressing to go out to a movie with friends and then find that you cannot hear the words. I hope that you will consider my input when making a decision regarding this exemption. Kind regards Jackie Mitchell
