I am a CODA (child of deaf adults) and also have a deaf sister and various other deaf friends and family. It is upsetting to me that it is not often that we can go out and enjoy a simple movie together. The captioned movies are already very limited and often we have to wait months after a movie has been released to enjoy seeing it on the big screen together (if it is one of the movies chosen to be screened with captions). The provision of captioning, text and audio description means access to this form of the arts is equitable. Captioning at the cinemas also means that Deaf people will have more avenues to learn, grow and enjoy great films. It promotes social inclusion and big cinemas should be seen as leaders in supporting equitable access. I sincerely hope that the Human Rights Commission does not grant this exemption.
