From: Helen Williams [ Sent: Monday, 7 December 2009 5:28 PM To: disabdis Cc: Bruce Allen Subject: Application for Propsosed Changes in The Disabilities Act-Captioning Dear Sir or Madam, I wish to protest the Application from the Cinema industry for a proposed exeption from the Disabilities Discrimination Act in relation to Captioning. I my role as an Audiologist, I am fully aware of the prevalance of disability of hearing in the community, and the difficulties those with hearing impairment experience when watching movies at Cinemas. At present my mainly elderly clients are not able to access captioning when they attend local cinemas here in Hornsby. They have to travel to other cinema complexes, or subtitled movies in specialised cinemas. They are already denied Access and Equity to see movies with the Captioning, unless they travel to the one or two cinemas, available at only one or two sessions offered. This is like taking away disabled toilets, or wheel chair access especially to people with a severe or profound loss who can ONLY enjoy the movies if viewed with captions. Sincerely, Helen Williams, Senior Audiologist
