About the 2026 nomination
InterAction for Health and Human Rights is the leading charity in Australia by and for people with innate variations of sex characteristics and their families, irrespective of diagnosis and medical history.
The organisation promotes the health, self-determination and bodily autonomy of intersex people in Australia.
They aim to help create a society where bodies are not stigmatised, and people are respected, protected and fulfilled by building community, evidence, capacity and education. They engage in law reform and policy work, and deliver psychosocial support, peer support and advocacy programs, including InterLink and Intersex Peer Support Australia programs.
About innate variations of sex characteristics
Innate variations of sex characteristics are also known as intersex variations or differences of sex development.
People with innate variations of sex characteristics form a diverse population with many different kinds of bodies, sex characteristics, sex markers, genders, identities, values and terminology and word preferences. What they share in common is an experience of having innate sex characteristics (such as chromosomes, gonads, reproductive development or hormones) that differ from medical norms for female or male bodies. The community experiences discrimination, stigmatisation and harmful practices because their bodies are seen as different.
