About the 2026 nomination
The Believe, Inquire, Respond to Disclosures (BIRD) Project is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led project developed by SNAICC in partnership with Yamurrah. The project was established in response to longstanding evidence that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim-survivors of child sexual abuse often encounter racism, a lack of cultural safety, disbelief and inadequate support when disclosing abuse.
BIRD is a co-designed, trauma-aware, healing-informed and culturally responsive training package to improve how health, child and family wellbeing and community service workers respond to disclosures of child sexual abuse by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and adult survivors.
SNAICC is committed to child safety and nurturing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in the early years. Project BIRD is an extension of that commitment aimed at preventing the experiences of childhood sexual assault for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
