About the complaint
The complainant has autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and was studying at the respondent post-graduate vocational education institute. She alleges that when she requested adjustments, a teacher was hostile towards her and discussed her disability inappropriately in class. She said that the institute banned her after she complained about the issue. She alleged that even when she was permitted to return, she was denied access to adjustments and training materials and felt she had no option but to defer her studies.
The institute denied discriminating against the complainant. The institute claimed it tried to respond to the complainant’s concerns but she was inconsistent in her dealings with the institute.
The complaint was resolved by conciliation with an agreement that the institute pay the complainant $80,000.
