About the complaint
The complainant attended the respondent museum with her family. She alleged that when she breastfed her seven-month-old baby, a staff member asked her to leave.
The museum apologised for the incident and said the request for the complainant to leave that part of the museum was based on a staff member’s mistaken belief about cultural sensitivity. The museum said it took all reasonable steps to prevent discrimination towards visitors.
The complaint was resolved by conciliation with an agreement that the museum pay the complainant $10,000 and continue to deliver relevant staff training to prevent discrimination towards visitors to the museum.
