About the complaint
The complainant is a transgender person who identifies as a woman and was incarcerated at a correctional facility operated by the respondent government department. The complainant alleged she was denied access to female clothing, that officers did not address her using her name or preferred pronouns, that she was denied access to hormone replacement therapy and that her requests to be housed in the female wing were ignored. She said she felt unsafe in the male correctional facility.
On being advised of the complaint, the government department indicated a willingness to try to resolve the complaint by conciliation.
The complaint was resolved with an agreement that the complainant be treated as a female incarcerated person.
