About the complaint

The complainant is a transgender woman who competes in a sport at club level. She alleged the sport peak body did not have a policy concerning transgender competitors, meaning the policy adopted by the international sporting body for elite athletes applied. This policy prohibited transgender women who transitioned after puberty, such as the complainant, from participating in female competition. The complainant was also unable to participate in male competition.

On being advised of the complaint, the sport peak body agreed to participate in conciliation.

The complaint was resolved with an undertaking by the sport peak body to develop a policy concerning competition by transgender people within twelve months. The peak body committed to consult the complainant in developing the policy and to work with her and her club to enable her participation in competition pending finalisation of the policy.
