About the complaint
The complainant’s brother is 45 years of age and identifies as autistic. He said his brother went to the respondent university bar to see a live band and alleged security staff asked him to leave because he was making other patrons uncomfortable. The complainant’s brother felt he was asked to leave because he looked and behaved differently to other patrons.
The bar said the band asked security staff to remove the complainant’s brother due to past incidents. The bar acknowledged that the complainant’s brother did not agree with the band’s account of the incidents and felt his views were not duly considered by security staff.
The complaint was resolved after the bar wrote to the complainant apologising to him and his brother for the incident and any resulting hurt and distress, and saying it always wanted to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment to the community.
