Campaign overview
Summary
There’s nothing casual about racism directly challenges the racism that appears in everyday life. When we call out racism in our systems — like education, health, justice and workplaces — we inspire both individual and collective action against all forms of racism.
We’ve heard loud and clear from many communities and organisations that racism goes beyond racial slurs and abuse. It’s also in workplace policies, education curricula, and how we think about the past as a nation. Many of you told us that racism is so common that it feels ‘casual’. That’s why we’ve updated our national anti-racism campaign — to tackle this issue head on: There’s nothing casual about racism.
We launched our previous campaign Racism. It stops with me in 2012. Since then we’ve built our understanding on how to challenge racism. Based on this, we worked with our supporters and stakeholders to develop There’s nothing casual about racism. It will take us into the future as we push for the National Anti-Racism Framework.
Together, we need to take collective action to tackle racism wherever it occurs, from the smallest interactions to where it continues in our laws, policies and systems. Think of it as combating the disease, rather than just a symptom. As the campaign continues to develop and unfold it will:
- Amplify expertise, in particular from First Nations and other communities experiencing racism
- Create information, tools and resources for our supporters and the broader public to combat racism
- Motivate and support the public to take action against racism
Let’s get real about change — together.
About the There’s nothing casual about racism design
The logo mark has been created using Martin, a typeface inspired by the Martin Luther King strikes and created by Black-owned font foundry, VOCAL. This large block type is then offset by handwritten letters that introduce a human, personal quality, reflecting the everyday and real lived experiences of racism.
There's nothing casual about racism
'There's nothing casual about racism' is a national anti-racism campaign for the Australian Human Rights Commission. It directly challenges the racism that appears in everyday life.
