International News story 16 December 2025

Summary

In late November 2025, the Australian Human Rights Commission joined partners in Halong, Vietnam to strengthen progress on human rights in the areas of Business and Human Rights, and the rights of older people. These enriching bilateral exchanges continue to build momentum for rights-based approaches in Vietnam.

From 24 - 27 November 2025, the Australian Human Rights Commission worked alongside Vietnamese partners in Halong to advance two important initiatives: promoting responsible business conduct and the rights of older people. Both activities are part of the Vietnam Human Rights Technical Cooperation Program funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

The week featured 2 key activities: an advanced training on responsible business conduct hosted by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a workshop on the rights of older people hosted by the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics. Both events were held during a challenging time as recent flooding in Central Vietnam affected attendance and speaker availability. Despite this, participants demonstrated strong commitment, engaging actively in discussions and sharing practical experiences.

Subject matter experts from Australia brought exceptional depth to these activities. Associate Professor Jonathan Kolieb (RMIT) introduced practical and innovative approaches to teaching RBC, sparking lively dialogue on adapting international standards into the Vietnamese context. At the workshop on the rights of older people, Prof. Philip O’Keefe (UNSW) drew on decades of research to provide valuable insights on ageing and inclusive development across the world with a particular focus on the Southeast Asia region.

Rachel Holt, Senior Executive, represented the Commission at both events, reinforcing partnerships and sharing insights into AHRC’s important work in ensuring access to justice, while DFAT’s active involvement highlighted strong relationship between Australia and Vietnam based on mutual respect and understanding.
