Over the last 40 years, we've helped deliver significant advances in relation to the rights of women and girls.

Summary

Explore 4 highlights of the Commission's work over the last 40 years in relation to promoting and protecting the rights of women and girls.

Ever since we were created as an independent statutory agency in 1986, the Commission has had a focus on improving the rights of women and girls in the home, in workplaces, in schools and in social spaces.

The foundation of our gender equality work is the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 which provides us with a legal framework to mediate cases of discrimination based on sex, sexuality and gender as well as advocate for improvements to laws, policies and procedures which disadvantage women and girls.

Our lobbying, advocacy and campaigning work over the last 40 years has helped end discrimination for women and girls in a range of contexts, improve their safety and security, and increase their opportunities for economic independence and leadership.

The Commission is proud to have been involved in helping deliver many legal and policy reforms over the last 4 decades which have benefitted women and girls, and we acknowledge, honour and celebrate the vital work of many women's rights advocates over this time.

Our 40 stories for 40 Years initiative is part of our 40 Years program.

Here are 4 key ways the Commission has helped improve the lives of women and girls in Australia:

Preventing sexual harassment in workplaces

Our landmark Respect@Work inquiry (2018) and report (2020) significantly improved our nation's response to sexual harassment in workplaces, changing Australia’s legal and cultural landscape, and signaling a fundamental shift in how we understand safety, dignity and equality at work.

Changing Australia's approach to work, care and gender

In 2007, the Commission released It’s About Time: Women, Men, Work and Family, the result of a two-year national inquiry into how Australians balance work and caring responsibilities. The report laid significant groundwork for creating workplaces where pregnancy, parenting and caring are recognised and supported and not treated as a disadvantage. Read the story (see below).

Improving gender equality and safety across our defence and security services

Between 2011 and 2014, the Commission led two breakthrough examinations into the treatment of women in the Australian Defence Force. This work marked a turning point in the national understanding of how culture, leadership and structure shape safety, opportunity and equality across our defence and security services specifically as well as our institutions more broadly. Making the Australian Parliament a safe and supportive workplace

Our Set The Standard report from 2021 exposed unacceptable bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assault in parliamentary workplaces and ushered in reforms to ensure our nation's most high-profile workplace is safe, respectful and aligned with best practice.  Read the story (see below).
