40 stories for 40 Years

Explore 40 of the Commission's key achievements over 4 decades of promoting and protecting human rights.

11 February 2026

In 2026, we’re marking 40 years of advancing and defending human rights in Australia.

Over that time, the Commission has worked in partnership with countless individuals, organisations and communities to help improve the lives of millions of people by advocating for reforms across the government, justice, business and community sectors as well as educating the Australian public about the value of human rights.

Throughout 2026, we’ll be profiling some of these key achievements to help tell the remarkable story of our work and impact over the last 40 years. These 40 stories will be drawn from our various advocacy areas including:

  • First People’s social justice
  • the rights of women, children, LGBTIAQ+ people and asylum seekers
  • racial, disability and age discrimination
  • civil/political rights

Our 40 stories for 40 Years initiative is part of our 40 Years program.
