About standards and guidelines

All standards and guidelines help explain rights and responsibilities under the law. Standards and Guidelines can be made in areas such as:

  • employment
  • education
  • public transport services
  • access to premises
  • accommodation and
  • the administration of Commonwealth laws and programs.

What is a standard?

Standards are legally binding regulations set by:

  • The Attorney-General under an Act
  • or a law made by the Parliament of Australia.

What is a guideline?

We write guidelines to help people and organisations understand their rights and comply with their responsibilities under an Act or an accompanying Standard.
