The complainant is a woman of 31 years of age. The complainant claimed that at a second-round interview for the role of marketing manager at a company involved in the manufacture of equipment for the mining industry, a member of the management team asked her if she was considering children in the future and told her that he was wary of hiring someone of her age and gender due to the potential for maternity leave. The complainant was unsuccessful.
The company denied the allegations, indicating that the successful candidate was a woman of a similar age to the complainant, but had more experience as a marketing manager and in the mining industry, and was able to start immediately.
The complaint was resolved with an agreement that the company pay the complainant $5,500.
