May 2024: Commission News | President's letter

Commission – General
May 2024 President's letter

Letter from the President: May 2024

It has been a challenging time, with the tragic events at Bondi and Wakeley casting a sombre shadow. It's imperative that we condemn these acts of violence in the strongest possible terms and work together to ensure such tragedies do not occur again.

The aftermath of these attacks has sparked heated debate in the media about the right to free speech, and the special duties and responsibilities that come with that right. As Race Discrimination Commissioner, Giridharan Sivaraman said: “These are difficult and distressing times. Emotions are understandably high, but it is important we ensure it does not spill into and angry or hateful response.”

Visits from International delegations

We’ve had the honour of hosting groups of international delegations, including the Singapore Ministry of Manpower, and the Taiwan Human Rights Commission, which has boosted visibility and coordination of international engagement developments and opportunities. Hosting such visits connects us as part of the broader international human rights system, as we play our unique role in protecting and promoting international human rights in Australia and advancing human rights globally.
