Time is running out to nominate for the 2007 Human Rights Medal and Awards

Do you know a person or an organisation that has worked tirelessly to promote and protect human rights and overcome discrimination in Australia?

If the answer is yes, then help the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) recognise their achievements by nominating them for the 2007 Human Rights Medal and Awards.

But hurry - there’s less than three weeks left to get your entries in (entries close 5 October)!

Since 1987, HREOC has recognised the often extraordinary contribution made to Australian society by a variety of men and women committed to issues of human rights, social justice and equality through these awards.

Last year’s winners were recognised for their tireless work on a wide variety of issues, including: Indigenous rights, refugees and asylum seekers, mental health and people trafficking.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the Awards which include the Human Rights Medal and award categories of Law, Community (individual and organisation), Arts Non-Fiction, Print Media, Television and Radio.

HREOC President John von Doussa said: “You don’t have to be famous or well known for your efforts to enter – the medal and awards are about celebrating the efforts of those who work everyday without fuss to promote and protect human rights and to overcome discrimination in Australia”.

To nominate the achievements of an individual or organisation simply fill in the entry form at www.humanrights.gov.au/hr_awards/entries.html or phone 02 9284 9618 and forward supporting material by 5 October, 2007.

But don’t just nominate someone, please join us at the gala luncheon ceremony at the Sheraton on the Park in Sydney on Monday, 10 December to hear the winners announced and show your support for these special awards.

Media personality Julie McCrossin will MC the event and Mr von Doussa will deliver the annual Human Rights Day Oration. For information on tickets contact 02 9284 9618 or download the ticket order form at www.humanrights.gov.au/hr_awards/tickets.html.
