When the Prime Minister Scott Morrison tabled the 2019 Closing the Gap report last month, we were again reminded about the lack of progress made to address the inequality between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

We know the statistics. They are part of the lived realities that confront our families and our communities across the country.

Kimberley Suicide report must be turning point for action

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar AO says the report into the deaths of 13 Aboriginal children and young people must be the turning point for action.

The West Australian Coroner Ros Fogliani has today handed down her report into the suicides in the Kimberley region between November 12 and March 2016.

Commissioner Oscar said unlike the many previous inquiries that have taken place, the 42 recommendations contained in this report must be implemented.

Turning the tide on Indigenous children in out of home care

Child protection intervention in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families across the country is at crisis point.

New approach to Closing the Gap Strategy welcomed

The Close the Gap Campaign has welcomed the COAG agreement to work in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on the Refreshed Closing the Gap Strategy.

The Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar AO is calling for submissions from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls and key organisations for the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s Voices) project.

As part of the project, Commissioner Oscar and her team have so far visited more than 40 communities and have heard from more than 1800 women and girls across the country in urban, regional and remote areas.
