Exemption application under the Sex Discrimination Act

The Australian Human Rights Commission has received an application from CJC Operations Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Curves.

This application is made pursuant to s 44 of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SDA) and is for an exemption from the operation of s 22 of the SDA. The applicant requests the exemption to allow it to exclude males from being able to become members of, and conduct fitness activities at, Curves Fitness Clubs within Australia.

Exemption application under the Age Discrimination Act

The Australian Human Rights Commission has received an exemption application from Carnival plc (trading as Carnival Australia) under the Age Discrimination Act 2004 (Cth).

Carnival seeks to restrict the participation of persons under the age of 19 on its cruises-ships departing an Australian port between 1 November and 7 January annually, unless accompanied by a responsible adult.
