The Sterilisation of Girls and Young Women in Australia
It is common in the legal commentary to refer to child sterilisation as if it is a gender neutral issue, [1] but the overwhelming majority of sterilisations and certainly all the cases heard by relevant Australian courts and tribunals, involve female children with intellectual disabilities. There is social problem at the centre of the debate about sterilisation. -

The Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the "DDA") aims, as far as possible, to promote the rights of people with a disability to participate equally in all areas of life. It does this by making it unlawful to discriminate against a person with a disability, subject to a number of exceptions intended to balance the rights of people with disabilities with those of other persons. The areas where discrimination is unlawful include insurance and superannuation. -

The drive for resources has seen the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples sacrificed in favour of economic growth. While many problems still remain today, there is evidence of a recent shift in the attitude of mining interests towards neighbouring Indigenous communities. Leading resource corporations such as Rio Tinto and Newmont have demonstrated willingness to formally recognise obligations towards traditional land owners and local Indigenous communities. -

It is highly likely that at least one worker in your workplace will, at some point in time, have a long or short-term mental illness. While you do not need to become an expert in mental health, having a better understanding of what mental illness is (including its possible effects on a worker) enables you to be more effective in handling issues that may arise. -

Annual Report 06-07: Chapter 5 - Legal Services
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act gives HREOC the function of inquiring into complaints concerning breaches of human rights or discrimination in employment. HREOC attempts to resolve such complaints through conciliation where appropriate. If the matter is not resolved through conciliation and the President is satisfied that a breach of human rights or an act of discrimination has occurred, the President reports on the matter to the federal Attorney-General. -
