On 23 September 1999, the federal Government passed the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Act No. 1 1999 (Cth). This law transferred the public hearing and determination process from the Commission to the Federal Court of Australia and the Federal Magistrates Court. This law came into effect on 13 April 2000. -

Prior to changes made by the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Act 1999 which took effect in April 2000, the Australian Human Rights Commission conducted hearings and made determinations on Disability Discrimination Act complaints referred to it by the Disability Discrimination Commissioner or delegate. Complaints were referred to the Commission because the complaint could not be settled by conciliation or because the nature of the matter was such that it should be determined by the Commission. -

Fact Sheet: Respect@Work – Changes to the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 and the Australian Human Rights Commission Act (December 2022)
On 12 December 2022, the Anti-Discrimination and Human Rights Legislation Amendment (Respect at Work) Act 2022 (Cth) (the Act) came into effect. The Act makes important amendments to the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (the SDA) and the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (Cth) (the AHRCA). These changes were recommended by the Australian Human Rights Commission (the Commission) following its inquiry Respect@Work: National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces.
