The National Association of Community Based Children's Services (NACBCS) represents long day care, preschool, occasional care and outside school hours care services that are community owned and managed. The members of NACBCS predominantly work in direct contact with children and families in the services and advocate for quality childcare services for young children. -

The Social Justice In Early Childhood Group (SJIECG) was formed in 1996 and is made up of early childhood professionals focussed on social justice issues as they relate to children and their families. The group aims to raise the awareness of social justice issues within the early childhood profession. The group membership includes teachers, students, childrens services managers, additional needs workers and administrators. Group members are based in Sydney, but work in local, state and national services. -

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield conducts regular public immunisation clinics for all residents. During 2001, families who were ex Woomera and Port Hedland detainees, who have settled in the local area, attended the immunisation clinics. It was evident that the families required special needs including interpreters, therefore the Community Health Nurse approached Child & Youth Health to undertake a joint pilot project to offer a specific program targeted at new arrivals to the area. -

Submission to the Green Paper on Homelessness - Which way home?
HREOC commends the Commonwealth government on making homelessness a priority issue and recognising that adequate housing is fundamental to social inclusion. Recognition of homelessness as a human rights issue should assist in the development of policy and programs to address homelessness. -

The United Nations Youth Association of Australia welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention. The issue of immigration detention for children has been coming under increased scrutiny in the past eight months. As far as it affects our international standing, the standards by which we treat children and our policies regarding refugees, it is a matter of great importance, which must be rigorously discussed in the public arena. -

As a counsellor of children and families at risk of child abuse and neglect, I have a number of concerns about the children being held in immigration detention in Australia and in our region on the request of Australian authorities. In my professional capacity I see children who have been abused by their Australian families. I find it appalling that Australia as a nation is now systematically abusing children whose parents have sought asylum here. In the following submission I offer suggestions under a number of headings: -

The Queensland Independent Education Union (QIEU) Equity Committee is a committee of employees in the non-government sector of education who are concerned with issues of justness and fairness in relation to employees and students in the non-government sector of education specifically and wider contemporary society generally. Members of the Equity Committee are currently or have in the past been employed as educators in the non-government sector of education and draw on a background of experience in primary and secondary education as well as experience in adult education. -

The Commission recognises the efforts of various agencies to protect our community and appreciates the attendant challenges. However, many of the activities of intelligence agencies have an impact on the enjoyment of fundamental human rights. Consequently, it is important that there is external periodic review of the intelligence community.
