HREOC - Annual Report 2001 - 2002:Chapter 3: Legal Services
The Commission's jurisdiction to hear and determine complaints of unlawful discrimination ceased on 13 April 2000 with the commencement of the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Act (No.1) 1999 (Cth) and was transferred to the Federal Court and Federal Magistrates Service. The Commission retained the jurisdiction to complete those public inquiries that had commenced prior to 13 April 2000. -

The President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) is responsible for the investigation and conciliation of complaints lodged under federal anti-discrimination and human rights law. Staff of HREOC’s Complaint Handling Section (CHS) assist the President to investigate and resolve complaints. The CHS also provides information to the public about the law and the complaint process through the Complaint Information Service and a range of community education and training activities. -

Over the years, HREOC has produced outstanding reports, like Bringing them home, with important recommendations. A Bad Business - Foreword
In a modern workforce where men and women work side by side it is important that employers protect their employees from unwanted behaviour that is not only harmful to the employee involved but also unprofessional and unproductive for the workplace. Sexual harassment is one form of unwanted behaviour that attempts to exclude individuals from the workplace by focusing on the sex of the person involved. Sexual harassment can happen in many different situations but overwhelmingly the complaints we receive involve the workplace. -

Submission to Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee Inquiry into the provisions of the Civil Aviation Amendment
1. The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) appreciates and endorses the objective of the Bill - to ensure that possible inconsistencies with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 ("DDA") and Sex Discrimination Act 1984 ("SDA") do not prevent measures necessary to ensure aviation safety. 2. The Bill confirms that civil aviation safety regulations can be made notwithstanding that they may be inconsistent with the DDA and the SDA, where this inconsistency is "necessary" to ensure aviation safety. 3. -

1. On 22 October 2001 the Sex Discrimination Commissioner ("the SD Commissioner") filed a Notice of Motion seeking to move the Court for orders that the SD Commissioner be granted leave to appear as amicus curiae in these proceedings, together with any consequential orders and directions. The Notice of Motion was supported by an affidavit of the SD Commissioner affirmed on 19 October 2001. -
