Woolworths' Gender Diversity Journey - Our experiences in elevating the representation of women in leadership - A letter from business leaders (2011)
In 2004, Woolworths began to place increasing focus on gender diversity. The business was in a growth phase and the need for the next generation of talented leaders was obvious. At that time, although women were 55 percent of Woolworths’ workforce, they represented only 16 percent of the top team. The opportunity for and benefits of having more women in leadership were clear. -

Where a complaint is made under the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986 (Cth) alleging breaches of human rights and discrimination in employment, the President or his delegate may report to the Attorney-General where conciliation cannot resolve the matter and an inquiry has satisfied the President there has been a breach of human rights or discrimination in employment. The Legal Section assists the President or his delegate to inquire into the complaints and prepare reports to the Attorney-General. -

By 2008, CBA had begun to place increasing emphasis on elevating the representation of women in leadership. Although women were approximately 60 percent of CBA’s workforce, they represented just 23 percent of executive manager and more senior roles. CBA believed that an increase in women leaders would benefit the business. -

Valuing Parenthood - Preface
In 1999, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's (HREOC) Report of the National Pregnancy and Work Inquiry, Pregnant and Productive, recognised the importance of paid maternity leave to Australian women and recommended that the Federal Government commission economic modelling to assess the viability and consequences of such a scheme. This interim options paper has been developed in order to consult, inform the debate and examine the options for paid maternity leave in Australia. The economic modelling to support this debate has not yet been done. -

The President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) is responsible for the investigation and conciliation of complaints lodged under federal anti-discrimination and human rights law. Staff of HREOC’s Complaint Handling Section (CHS) assist the President to investigate and resolve complaints. The CHS also provides information to the public about the law and the complaint process through the Complaint Information Service and a range of community education and training activities. -

Changing Hearts, Changing Minds
We all share a responsibility to lead cultural change for inclusion of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex. Building on the previous work of the Commission, I’ll be using my term as Human Rights Commissioner to ensure these issues are given national attention. It was an honour to be a keynote speaker at the Human Rights Forum of the Asia Pacific Outgames in Darwin.
