Social Justice Report 2009
The report is provided in accordance with section 46C(1) (a) of the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986. This provides that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner is to submit a report regarding the enjoyment and exercise of human rights by Aboriginal persons and Torres Strait Islanders, and including recommendations as to the action that should be taken to ensure the exercise and enjoyment of human rights by those persons. -

I have also used this opportunity to examine the enjoyment and exercise of human rights by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in light of other changes to policy and legislation made between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009 in accordance with section 46C(1)(a) of the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (Cth). -

This submission is made by the Australian Human Rights Commission, Australia’s national human rights institution. It outlines a number of issues that the Commission suggests should be considered by the Human Rights Committee as it develops a List of Issues Prior to Reporting ahead of Australia’s preparation of its sixth periodic report regarding the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
