Senate Employment, Workplace Relations, Small Business and Education Committee Inquiry

The submission by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) to the Senate Employment, Workplace Relations, Small Business and Education Committee Inquiry regarding the Workplace Relations Legislation Amendment (More Jobs, Better Pay) Bill 1999 focuses on areas of specific concern to the Sex Discrimination Commissioner. The submission does not comment on the legislative scheme as a whole but rather on how the legislative framework proposed by the Government might operate to minimise potentially discriminatory impacts.

Submission to Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women – Information for List of Issues on Australia (2017)

Australia’s record on gender equality is mixed. Despite very high attainment in education, Australia’s overall position on the Global Gender Gap Index is comparatively low at 46th. Pregnancy Discrimination - A Growing Concern

Last week a woman told her boss that she was pregnant. She worked as a senior sales representative. Partly paid by salary and partly by commission on her sales, over the past year she reached the highest level of sales - a result from which her employer reaped much benefit. After mentally processing the news of her pregnancy, her boss stated that, due to the fact she would be leaving soon, he would be unable to pay her any commission on sales she made before she left the company. This is a true story.

Resources & Infrastructure Industry Skills Council (RIISC)2nd National Conference

The shortage of skilled workers is one of Australia's most pressing economic issues. The reasons would be familiar to all of you so suffice it to say that a combination of the mining boom, the house renovations boom, economic growth in general and the expansion of our cities have all contributed to the demand for skilled blue collar workers. The reason we are all here this morning is to explore ways of addressing that shortage.

Women in the super network

Thank you for asking me to speak at your lunch time seminar. I have been excited by the prospect - as you may be aware, I am doing two jobs at the moment at the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. One is the job of Privacy Commissioner, my usual job, and the other is acting as the Sex Discrimination Commissioner pending a Government decision about a permanent appointment to that position. Working on these two radically different subject areas is quite fascinating.

Towards Prosperity Conference

Thank you for inviting me to be part of your Towards Prosperity conference. Let me first congratulate the Government and the community for engaging in such a democratic, but time consuming process. And maybe even a risky one. Who knows where participatory democracy might eventually end?
