The meeting was chaired by Dr Jocelynne A. Scutt, Commissioner, together with Ms Santi Mariso, Community Education and Liaison Officer and Mrs Pia Struwe, Investigation and Conciliation Officer with the Anti-Discrimination Commission, and with Mr Stuart Beswick of Multicultural Tasmania. It was attended by some 24 invited participants, two of whom were children (10/13). The Commissioner gave a short introduction. Then everyone introduced her/himself and said a few words about where they had come from and their interests. -

Eight members of the refugee women’s group and two EMC workers attended the consultation which was facilitated by Omeima Sukkarieh (transcript and translating) and Susanna Iuliano from HREOC. The Ecumenical Migration Centre was established in 1962 and became a part of the Brotherhood of St Laurence in 1999. -

“I have had many experiences of discrimination like many of our community, and probably because of our appearance. What they do is for e.g. I was standing beside the road and was given the finger. Or when I enter the store, some people look at me like a stranger and make me feel uncomfortable, and some even say ‘terrorist’.” -

It was attended by 21 invited participants, all Iraqi women living in Shepparton who attend English classes at the Goulburn-Ovens TAFE. The consultation was held during regular class-time and two TAFE English teachers attended as observers. -

The meeting was chaired by Ms Vicki Mitsos, Chair of the Shepparton Ethnic Communities Council, and attended and facilitated by Susanna Iuliano and Omeima Sukkarieh from HREOC. It was attended by 80 invited participants who were studying English at the Goulburn-Ovens TAFE. The TAFE English teachers allocated their regular English class-time for the consultation and attended as observers. -

consultations on eliminating prejudice against Arab and Muslim AustraliasThe meeting was convened by Omeima Sukkarieh, Community Liaison Officer, and Susanna Iuliano, Policy Research Officer, from HREOC. It was attended by 12 participants from the local Iraqi community, including the local Imam. Participants were Iraqi refugee men, the majority on Temporary Protection Visas. As the community is small, consultation participants requested that the name of their town not be referred to in this notes. -

The consultation was organised by the Islamic Women's Welfare Centre as part of its research into racial violence against Muslim women living in Victoria. It was facilitated by Ms Joumanah El Matrah, Manager of the Islamic Women's Welfare Council of Victoria, and attended by Ms Omeima Sukkarieh, Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. Amna Malkin acted as group leader and interpreter. The consultation was attended by 11 members of the program all of whom were Eritrean Muslim refugee women over the age of 60 who have been in Australia between two and13 years. -

Some participants had not experienced discrimination themselves. One woman mentioned that she had experienced significant prejudice but did not give details. However, she related the following experience of her son. -
