I congratulate EOPHEA for organising this discussion. Although, of course, your focus is primarily on employment in the university environment, the conference program is clearly designed to address equal opportunity issues of much more general significance. I have approached my own paper in the same spirit: I hope it will be particularly relevant in your own context as equity practitioners in higher education, but I have taken the opportunity to raise issues of wider relevance. -

The DDA and employment of people with a disability
The standard sort of speech that is often delivered by people in my sort of position at this sort of event is a combination of pep talk and pamphlet, with some bits of a law lecture thrown in: telling people with a disability and their advocates that they have rights under discrimination law, and telling employers that they have responsibilities, and attempting to set out the terms and the effect of the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act (or "DDA"). -

On February 15, 2006, Commissioner Graeme Innes hosted a meeting of representatives from a number of national peak disability organisations, representatives from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), the Australian Medical Association (AMA), and Government advisory bodies. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways in which the availability of adjustable examination couches in General Practices could be improved. -

DDA conciliation: insurance
A man who is HIV-positive and runs his own business complained that, when he disclosed his HIV-positive status, his accident and insurance cover provider cancelled his cover. The complaint was resolved when the insurer agreed to provide renewed cover, without additional premium but with an exclusion clause specific to the complainant's situation and subject to an annual medical certificate from his doctor. -

Understanding Disability Discrimination
In some ways I think I have been asked to teach my grandmother to suck eggs (though I am sure my own venerable forebear did no such thing!). I would say that there is no industry more skilled in the art of disability discrimination than the insurance and superannuation industry. Before you decide I am irretrievably biased against your work let me explain that, of course, I understand such discrimination is the basis of your enterprise. -

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the launch of the report of the national inquiry into the human rights of people with mental illness. This report is the result of extensive research; public hearings in all States and Territories; and oral evidence and written submissions from over 1300 witnesses. I have been extremely fortunate to have the assistance of two commissioners with a long standing interest in the area of mental health - Dame Margaret Guilfoyle and Mr David Hall. -
