Opinion Pieces - Improper sexual behaviour still rife (2008)
When I started in my new role as Sex DiscriminationCommissioner at the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission last year, I thought I had a pretty good idea of the issues I would face. But I will be frank in saying that I am genuinely shocked by just how pervasive sexual harassment seems to be. I had thought, ''Who doesn't know these days that this behaviour is wrong and unlawful?'' Well, clearly many don't. -

HREOC submission to Inquiry into Immigration Detention in Australia
Recommendation 1: The Migration Act should be amended so that detention occurs only when necessary. This should be the exception not the norm. It must be for a minimal period, be reasonable and be a proportionate means of achieving at least one of the aims outlined in international law (ExComm Conclusion 44). These limited grounds for detention should be clearly prescribed in the Migration Act. -

2006 - An opportunity not to be missed?
Australian summer holidays. The phrase evokes an image of sun, sand, slow days and late nights. But just imagine you and your mates are staying on the Gold Coast and it takes 20 phone calls for you to find a beachside unit with a shower you can use. Or the only wheelchair accessible restaurant in a 3km radius is fully booked so you have to eat take-away most nights. -

They also include recommendations to government that promote and protect the rights of Indigenous Australians. Australian Marriage Forum ad might be distasteful but it should have been screened

On Sunday night, the Australian Marriage Forum (AMF) broadcast an advertisement against marriage for same-sex couples. The advertisement was scheduled to be broadcast on Channels 7, 9 and SBS.

The AMF advertisement argued that same-sex couples should not be able to marry under the law, because children "wherever possible" need a mother and a father. It is hardly a new or ground-breaking argument.

AMF paid to have its advertisement aired during SBScoverage of the Sydney Mardi Gras parade because that would give it maximum attention.
-

GUIDE DOG OWNERS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION
I have been concerned for some time of legislation which is being passed without any consultation whatsoever with our organisation. As some people may remember, I was the one that fought hard and succeeded in getting legislation passed for dog guides to go into any place and on all forms of public transport. This legislation was passed in 1957 but now it has been made more or less obsolete as dog guides have to compete with companion dogs, hearing dogs, assistance dogs and puppies being walked by people rearing them for future dog guides. -
