Graeme Innes, AM, Deputy Disability Discrimination Commissioner, welcomed participants to the meeting, and expressed the Commission's pleasure that so much good will and commitment had been observed during the preparatory work leading up to the meeting. He noted that many problems impacting on people with a disability are systemic issues, and may not be most effectively resolved through individual complaints which, in the main, provide individual solutions that do not have wider applicability. -

Sterilisation
This paper will highlight the findings of research examining Family Court and state Guardianship Tribunal's originating materials and written reports from 'experts' and family members. It includes all sterilisation cases involving minors that have proceeded to legal judgment in Australia between 1992-1998. The central assertion is that non-consensual sterilisation continues to be framed as a medical problem to be 'cured' for family and social reasons. -

The Commission is a national independent statutory body established under the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986. It has a President and five Commissioners. During this time, the world's attention has been focussed on the international terrorist threat and how governments, including our own, can contain and counter that threat. In Australia, the Commission has been mindful of the fact that any counter-terrorism measures must be enacted and administered in accordance with existing domestic and international laws, including human rights laws. -
