The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has received an application from Mr D.Williams for a temporary exemption under section 55 of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) from relevant provisions of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) and the DDAto permit deferral of provision of wheelchair access on a public transport service to be known as Airport Direct operating from Shepparton to Melbourne. -

NOTICE OF DECISION ON APPLICATION FOR TEMPORARY EXEMPTION: AUSTRALASIAN RAILWAYS ASSOCIATION: DIRECT ASSISTANCE IN ASCENDING AND DESCENDING BOARDING RAMPS
By this instrument, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (‘HREOC') grants an application by the Australasian Railways Association (‘the ARA') for a temporary exemption pursuant to sections 55(1) and 55(1A) of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) (‘DDA') in relation to direct assistance to passengers. -

Burdekin: NATIONAL INQUIRY
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the launch of the report of the national inquiry into the human rights of people with mental illness. This report is the result of extensive research; public hearings in all States and Territories; and oral evidence and written submissions from over 1300 witnesses. I have been extremely fortunate to have the assistance of two commissioners with a long standing interest in the area of mental health - Dame Margaret Guilfoyle and Mr David Hall. -

The title I have taken for these remarks is "Is there a slow lane on the information superhighway". I fear that by now there may already be something dated or quaint in using the term "information superhighway". I am going to use it anyway, and perhaps make matters of style worse by adding reference to a slow lane, because I think a few important issues are suggested by this title. -

Submission to Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee Inquiry into the provisions of the Civil Aviation Amendment (Relationship with Anti-Discrimination Legislation) Bill 2004
1. The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) appreciates and endorses the objective of the Bill - to ensure that possible inconsistencies with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 ("DDA") and Sex Discrimination Act 1984 ("SDA") do not prevent measures necessary to ensure aviation safety. 2. The Bill confirms that civil aviation safety regulations can be made notwithstanding that they may be inconsistent with the DDA and the SDA, where this inconsistency is "necessary" to ensure aviation safety. 3. -

Overlooked Consumers – Australians with Disabilities and Older People
Every day, one in five Australians experiences difficulties or frustrations in performing everyday tasks with everyday things, such as consumer electronics and appliances. As technology develops, an increasing proportion of products are inaccessible to people with a range of different disabilities. These one-in-five Australians are what the author terms the ‘overlooked consumers’. -

<p>(check against delivery)</p> <p>I acknowledge the traditional owners of this land.&nbsp; I do so not as a formulaic beginning, but as a sincere recognition of the place which the land holds in the lives and culture of our first Australians.&nbsp; I saw much of the disadvantage Aboriginal people experience during my time as Race Discrimination Commissioner, and fail to understand why - at a time when we are seeking to recognise them in our constitution - we would be changing laws to reduce their protection from the serious challenges of racial vilification.</p> -
