I knew Brad well and admired him a great deal. We met when he joined the Crown Solicitor’s Office and we worked closely together in that office for a number of years. He was appointed Crown Solicitor of South Australia when I left that position to practice at the private Bar. He was subsequently appointed Solicitor-General of South Australia, the office from which, I believe, he made his greatest contribution to Australian public law. -

Commission Determinations, DDA decisions
Prior to changes made by the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Act 1999 which took effect in April 2000, the Australian Human Rights Commission conducted hearings and made determinations on Disability Discrimination Act complaints referred to it by the Disability Discrimination Commissioner or delegate. Complaints were referred to the Commission because the complaint could not be settled by conciliation or because the nature of the matter was such that it should be determined by the Commission. -

It is a great pleasure to deliver a Blackfriars Lecture. A few weeks ago I gave a speech to the Sydney Institute outlining the approach I plan to take to human rights as the Federal Commissioner titled ‘The Forgotten Freedoms’. In this speech I outlined that I have concerns about the key freedoms of expression, worship, association and property rights. Reasserting them will be the focus of my tenure as Human Rights Commissioner. -

The disabled child [age removed], had cerebral palsy and from memory his family was [nationality removed]. I think his Curtin ID number was [removed] and his name [name removed]. His family arrived [date removed]. He had a couple of siblings, [age removed, name removed]. [Identifying details removed]. Last I heard was that the child was being cared for at Curtin (now closed) in the Health clinic by the nurses as the mother had refused to look after him anymore as she had exhausted all visa application processes and was still refused. -
