My name is Dr Sev Ozdowski and I am the Human Rights Commissioner and I am assisted in the Inquiry by two colleagues of mine, Mrs Robin Sullivan who is to the left of me, the Queensland Children's Commissioner. ACTU response to Request for comment: Possible public inquiry on employment and disability issues
The ACTU believes that an inquiry, as a vehicle for public education, would assist to promote employment opportunities for people with disability. Additionally the inquiry would provide the opportunity to consider ways to facilitate employment participation and could therefore provide a means to report and make recommendations to Government. -

It must also be recognised that many children in detention centres have been deeply damaged - further trauma could be avoided, in part, by prudent selection and training of staff and guards. It needs to be assured that only staff who have learned to respect relevant cultures, religious traditions and are knowledgeable of the human rights of asylum seekers and the often traumatic conditions of countries from which the people have fled and been exposed to, will be selected for employment. -

The majority of reported sexual harassment was targeted at women, involved multiple forms of harassing behaviour and occurred on more than one occasion. In over one in five cases, the harassment continued for more than 12 months. Verbal harassment was often a precursor to physical forms of harassment. -
