7. Refugee Status Determination for Children in Immigration Detention
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that around half of the 50 million displaced persons in the world are children. Around 10 million of these children are under the care of UNHCR. Approximately 100,000 separated children roam Western Europe.(1) During 1999 alone, more than 20,000 separated children applied for asylum in Western Europe, North America or Australia.(2) Of those 20,000 unaccompanied children, 46 travelled to Australia to seek asylum. In the same year a further 202 children sought asylum in Australia with their families.(3) -

On 28 February 1995, His Honour Justice O'Loughlin directed that leave be granted to the Commission, pursuant to s.11(1)(o) of the HREOC Act, to file and serve written submissions in these matters limited to the issues that are by virtue of the terms of the respective applications relevant to the matters that are still to be determined. -

Improving the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is a longstanding challenge for governments in Australia. While there have been improvements made in some areas since the 1970s (notably in reducing high rates of infant mortality1) overall progress has been slow and inconsistent. The inequality gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians remains wide and has not been progressively reduced. -

The deceased had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and for driving while disqualified. He was placed in what the Coroner described as an enclosed cell, in which occupant vision is impossible, at around 3.00am and told he would remain there for a period of four hours. -

HREOC - Annual Report 2001 - 2002: Chapter 2: Complaint Handling Section
The Complaint Handling Section had a productive year investigating and conciliating complaints of alleged discrimination and human rights breaches; providing information to the public about federal anti-discrimination and human rights law through its Complaint Information Service and community education and liaison program; and providing complaint investigation and resolution skills training to state equal opportunity, anti-discrimination authorities, other Australian Public Service agencies and private companies. -

Isma listen: Eliminating prejudice against Arab and Muslim Australians
The meeting was chaired by Mr Abdul Majid Zahra, Manager of Tripoli and Mena Association (TMA), and facilitated by Omeima Sukkarieh (notes) from HREOC. Also note-taking was Administrative Officer of TMA, Zeinab Rizk. The TMA Arabic Aged Worker Sam El Sayed also attended. 79 Arabic-speaking seniors attended, including both Muslims (the majority) and Christians. The consultation was conducted in Arabic.
