Notice of application for temporary exemption: Tiger Airways
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has received an application (attached in MS Word format) from Tiger Airways, dated 12 November 2007 and received 20 November 2007, requesting exemption from the Disability Discrimination Act and from the provisions of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport so far as to excuse Tiger Airways from liability for failure to provide access for persons unable to board or disembark using passenger boarding stairs. Pursuant to section 11(1)(f) and 20(1) of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986 (Cth), I attach a report of my inquiry into a complaint against the Commonwealth of Australia (Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs) and GSL (Australia) Pty Ltd. I have found that acts done on behalf of the Commonwealth were contrary to the human rights of the complainant as provided for in articles 7 and 10 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. -

Bringing them Home - Chapter 21
Indigenous children throughout Australia remain very significantly over-represented `in care' and in contact with welfare authorities. Their over-representation increases as the intervention becomes more coercive, with the greatest over-representation being in out-of-home care. Indigenous children appear to be particularly over-represented in long-term foster care arrangements. A high percentage of Indigenous children in long-term foster care live with non-Indigenous carers. -
