To those of you who have been following this Inquiry closely, it may be unclear as to why this hearing is taking place as I had said in December 2002 that those would be the last of the Inquiry's hearings. I will therefore briefly set out the history and methodology of the Inquiry to this point which will take us to why we are here today. I will then set out what steps remain to be completed after this hearing is concluded and prior to publication. Finally, I will set out the proposed procedure for today's hearing. Commission Website: National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention
The Hunter Community Council was established in 1986 as a peak representative body to support and advocate on behalf of the non-government welfare sector in the Hunter region. In April of this year the Hunter Community Council held a forum attended by welfare agencies representing a wide range of services including: the youth sector, education, mental health, migrant centres and refugee resettlement services, the Catholic Social Justice Commission, and early childhood and family support services. -

I am so pleased to be able to join you this evening for this year’s Vincent Fairfax Speaker Series. I thought I might never make it – for the last two days I have had the privilege of being on-board the warship HMAS Sydney as it undertook war exercises offshore – part of my defence review. As my staff gradually hit the decks one after the other with sea sickness, I wondered whether arranging the sea visit to coincide with tonight’s event was a smart move. -
