As this is the first public speech I have made in Sydney since the events at Redfern several weeks ago, I would also like to begin today by paying my respects to the family of TJ Hickey and to express my condolences for your loss. I would also like to acknowledge the elders of the Redfern community for the strength and the dignity that you have displayed in dealing with these tragic events and their aftermath. -

The staff consisted of Anti-Racism Contact Officers, Community Information Officers and primary and secondary teachers. The meetings were organised by the Department and facilitated by Omeima Sukkarieh and attended by Meredith Wilkie or Edwina Rankin from HREOC. -

Marriage Equality (2012)
The Australian Human Rights Commission considers that the fundamental human rights principle of equality means that civil marriage should be available, without discrimination, to all couples, regardless of sex, sexual orientation or gender identity. The Commonwealth Parliament, and some state parliaments are now considering legislation that would provide all couples with the same access to civil marriage that is currently confined to opposite-sex couples. This paper considers how the human rights principle of equality underpins legislative recognition of marriage equality. -
