The consultation was organised by the Illawarra Ethnic Communities Council and chaired by the ECC Executive Officer, Kathy Tzanis. The meeting was facilitated by Meredith Wilkie and Omeima Sukkarieh (notes) from HREOC with Omeima also interpreting parts of the discussion. It was attended by 14 invited participants. -

Native Title Report 2004 : Chapter 1 : The Consultations
During the 2004 reporting period I have embarked on a series of consultations focusing on the ideas and principles that were contained in a Discussion Paper, released by my predecessor as Social Justice Commissioner in June 2003. The Discussion Paper was entitled Promoting Economic and Social Development through Native Title (at Annexure 1). The Muslim Council was established in January 2003 and has about 22 member organisations. It is recognised by the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils and represents Muslims in NSW. -

The meeting was attended by eight invited participants: officers from each of the host organisations, from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, from the Australian Federal Police (ACT Policing) and the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs and by representatives of two community organisations. It was facilitated by Omeima Sukkarieh and Susanna Iuliano from HREOC. -

The consultation was organised by the Islamic Women's Welfare Centre as part of its research into racial violence against Muslim women living in Victoria. It was facilitated by Ms Joumanah El Matrah, Manager of the Islamic Women's Welfare Council of Victoria, and attended by Ms Omeima Sukkarieh, Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. Amna Malkin acted as group leader and interpreter. The consultation was attended by 11 members of the program all of whom were Eritrean Muslim refugee women over the age of 60 who have been in Australia between two and13 years. -

These notes summarise three separate consultations attended by 31 primary school students in Years 5 and 6 from three government primary schools in the Fairfield, Port Jackson and Bondi school districts in the Sydney metropolitan area. The meetings were organised with the assistance of the NSW Department of Education and Training and participating schools. Most students who took part in the consultations were either Muslim or from an Arabic-speaking background. Students were required to obtain permission from their parents in order to take part in the meetings.
