Subject: Unpaid Family Carers have no rights in Australia
The attached Documents have been written for the Nation Walk a Mile in My Shoes, Family carers Coalition.
It is our belief that both federal and state governments are guilty of AGE discrimination against people with dependent disabilities based upon an arbitrary age-based delineation between aged care and disability care services, which prevent people aged less than 65 years from access to the same level of funding and the same choices in options as those offered to people aged over 65 years.
We believe that family caregivers are being treated as "unpaid slave labour" in caring for disabled relatives for nothing when paid care workers doing the same job earn a living wage.
We are prisoners in our own homes because of the lack of support services on offer including respite.
Family carers are contributing over $32Billion a year to the national economy and to the welfare of people with severe and profound disabilities,
but an ungrateful nation gives us almost nothing in return.
Please help us to make this a public issue by publishing our Discussion Papers and COAG Submission and helping us to change the way family carers are treated.
